Therapeutic Horsemanship for veterans and active-duty personnel is an effective solution preventing suicide in these populations. Horses have a unique survival trait for PTSD and Anxiety Disorders that allows them to detect anxiety in humans to a high degree. If they detect anxiety in their surroundings, they suspect that a threat may exist nearby. As soon as the human calms down, the horse immediately calms down also. This immediate biofeedback helps the human to learn about their anxiety levels and to self-manage their anxiety. When they can control their anxiety "melt downs" while in public places, they regain hope for their future.
